Do you have the Length, Width and Height [in feet] of the wall you are looking to build? Here is how to calculate your approximate tonnage:
Our natural stone has an approximate density of 160 lbs per cubic foot.
Take your Length (L), Width (W) and Height (H) and multiply them together: (L x W x H) = Volume in cubic feet Multiply your Volume in cubic feet by 160. This will give you the required weight in pounds. To get tons, divide this by 2000.
For Example: I am looking to build a garden wall 2 ft wide, 8 ft in length and 4 ft high (2ft) x (4 ft) x (8ft) = 64 cubic feet (64 cubic feet) x (160 lbs) = 10,240 lbs of stone Divide to get your tonnage: 10,240 / 2000 = 5.12 tons. [ approximately 5 tons of stone needed]
CALCULATION OF CRUSH TONNAGE:
QUICK TIP: 1 cubic yard will cover 100 square feet at approximately 3 inches deep.
Calculate you the area of the space you are looking to spread the crush (in square feet). (Length x Width) = AREA Multiply this by how deep you are looking to have the stone. Have your depth also in feet. AREA x depth 2 inches = 0.167 ft 3 inches = 0.25 ft 4 inches = 0.333 ft Divide this by 27 to get the amount of cubic yards needed.
For Example: I am looking to have stone crush around my plants in a 15' by 8' garden bed. I'd like it to be 3 inches in depth. (15' x 8') x 0.25ft / 27 = 1.11 cubic yards of crushed stone.
To get full ground coverage, how do I figure out the depth I will need to go? First, decide on the crush type you'd like - What size is it's diameter? (40mm, 20mm, 10mm etc) The larger the diameter of stone you choose, the thicker it will need to be for full ground coverage.
(Diameter of your crush in inches) x (1.8) = required depth (in inches) to achieve full coverage
Example: I want the 40 mm Creston Valley crush. How deep do I spread it to make sure the ground is fully covered? 40 mm = 1.575 inches (1.575) x 1.8 = 2.8 inches in depth needed.
*If you are not using weed barrier under your stone, and are looking to not have weeds growing through - we advise to always go at least 3.5-4 inches in depth (for 40mm diameter crush). Any sunlight getting through the crushed rock will cause plant material to grow. *
CALCULATION OF FLAGSTONE TONNAGE:
Typically our flagstone is sold by the pallet. Horizontal pallets are approximately 1.5 tons (3000 lbs) each, while the upright pallets are approximately 4800 lbs each.
Here are your typical square foot conversions per thickness of flagstone: 1 inch Flagstone: 160 square feet of coverage per ton 2 inch Flagstone: 80 square feet of coverage per ton 3 inch Flagstone: 50-60 square feet of coverage per ton
*Keep in mind that spacing between your stones highly dictates how much stone you will require to cover your project area.
