At the end of the 18th Century, it was discovered that diamond was formed from carbon. Chemists in the following decades attempted many times to create diamonds in their laboratory with cheap carbon sources, none of which succeeded. Edward Acheson (1880's) was one of those frustrated chemists and in his experiments of mixing electricity, aluminum silicate and carbon, he found these beautiful shiny hexagonal dark crystals were forming. Unfortunately these were not diamonds, but something almost equally as beautiful. He called them Carborundum.
Silicon Carbide is unusual being was unearthed in nature, after its original synthetic discovery. In 1904 in the Canyon Diablo crater in Arizona, Dr. Moissan found naturally occurring silicon carbide in the site of a meteorite impact. Naturally occurring Silicon Carbide is called Moissanite and it is extremely rare to find, as it is brought to earth by meteorites from space.
Carborundum is a very enchanting crystal, with black spiked crystals like a castle, gorgeous rainbow-like luster, iridiscent colors of green, blues, purple, pink and yellow.
